  • EMPIRE’S the cool list– 23. Tom Cruise (actor-producer). Credits: THE LAST SAMURAI, the recently-wrapped Michael Mann action film COLLATERAL, in which he plays an out-and-out psychopathic killer. As much a brand as a player. Presumptively in his golden years as an actor, now that he’s in his 40s.

  • More from Rome’s premiere: Cruise, though, looks more like Benigni than Toshiro Mifune: during his meeting/show with the press he jumps, at a certain point, over the table of the conference room, he demonstrates [his newly acquired body flexibility] by reaching his toes with his fingertips, then he smiles and even wipes his [female] interpreter’s forehead with his shirt … Cruise the star becomes extremely down-to-earth when we ask him about Rome. ‘It’s extraordinarily fascinating, it takes your breath away … It’s more and more beautiful each time I come back here … Moreover, yesterday night I went back to my hotel suite and in the middle of the night, together with a group of friends, we had a fabulous pasta-party …
  • Cruise on Inside The Actor’s Studio Jan 11th

On the one hand, you get a relaxed if occasionally wary Cruise — who is both a good actor and a big star — talking mainly about acting as a craft.

In a little under 90 minutes not counting commercials, he talks about aspects of 16 movies, from Taps to The Last Samurai. You hear his thoughts about working with people like Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, what he wants from a director and how he researches his roles.

He also does impressions of Donald Duck and Jack Nicholson, and talks very seriously about his parents’ divorce and his father’s death. There’s even a little chat about his childhood experiences with kissing.
