Small interview WotW and M:I-3

The Trades.com has a little story about WotW and M:I-3:

During my time as an entertainment writer, I’ve interviewed several A-list celebrities, but none as famous as Tom Cruise. With his magnetic charisma, effortless acting ability, and savvy business sense, Cruise is quite possibly the most well known movie star in the world.

His latest project, an updated version of the H.G. Wells classic, “War of the Worlds” (which opens on June 29th), promises to be one of his highest grossing movies to date. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film places Cruise’s character in the midst of the battle for human survival when extra-terrestrials attack. Although alien invasion films are nothing new to moviegoers, Cruise promises that “War of the Worlds” will elevate the genre to a new level. “Steven and I always say that War of the Worlds is the smallest biggest film,” Cruise remarks, “because it’s the largest scale picture I’ve ever been involved in…but it’s also incredibly intimate. I hope that it just scares the heck out of everyone [laughs]. It’s scary. It’s a ride.”

Besides promoting “War of the Worlds”, this summer Cruise will also continue work on the highly anticipated “Mission: Impossible 3”, which “Lost” and “Alias” creator J.J. Abrams is directing. “I’m really excited to be working with J.J. Abrams,” Cruise tells me. “He’s an enormously talented guy.” He adds, “M:I-3 has really unique characters and a great story. I believe it’s the best story we’ve had out of all of the films in the series. If you look at the pilot of Alias, if you look at the pilot of Lost, if you look at the pilot of Felicity, you can really see the hand of J.J. Abrams and how much he likes character. Now you take that, and then there’s going to be huge, large scale action sequences that are very unique. I believe at this point, as we’re looking at it, it’s going to be an epic action movie.”

Does Cruise see any similarities between “War of the Worlds” and “M:I-3”? “I am very proud [to be a part of both],” he says. “I’ve already been working on M:I-3 for many months while I was shooting War of the Worlds. M:I- 3’s going to come out next summer. They’re just very different. They’re very different stories, and the filmmakers are different.”

As big of a movie star as Cruise is, his most endearing quality is that he has not been consumed by his fame. He is incredibly easy to talk to and remains grounded in his outlook on life. And even as his success continues to mount, I have a feeling that his humble nature won’t change anytime soon.

Hitachi chooses Tom Cruise movie War of the Worlds for flatscreen assault

    WOTW Hitachi

LONDON – Hitachi is hooking up with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise in a global promotional campaign promote its flatscreen TVs in the remake of the of the HG Wells Classic ‘War of the Worlds’.

The deal with Paramount Pictures marks a departure for Hitachi, which has not before ventured into product placement or branded entertainment and movie cross promotion.

Hitachi said it expected a significant influence on its sales and brand image from tie-ins and suggested that ‘War of the Worlds’ was only the first of what could be a string of movies it ties up with as it attempts to tap into global appeal.

Kazuhiro Tachibana, a spokesman for Hitachi, said: “Our ‘The Ultimate Visual Experience’ campaign is a perfect match between Spielberg and Cruise’s pursuit of the world’s best in film entertainment and Hitachi’s commitment to the highest picture quality through its digital consumer electronic products.”

The movie, which is due out this summer, is a remake of the 1953 film based on the 1898 HG Wells book. ‘War of the World’ caused a storm when first broadcast as a Orson Welles radio play in 1938 after Americans thought Martians had actually landed.

Japanese electronics giant Hitachi hopes the tie-up will give a major shot in the arm to its flatscreen TVs sales, as the market suffers from falling profits and oversupply.

Hitachi has signed a deal with Paramount, the producer of the movie to provide, plasma TVs, DVD camcorders and other products for product placement roles in the film.

Lisa DiMarzio, senior vice-president worldwide marketing partnerships at Paramount Pictures, said: “Hitachi’s global promotion with ‘War of the Worlds’ is a multi-tiered campaign that spans television, print, and online, and also includes several innovative consumer activation tactics that will be unveiled throughout the campaign.”

Hitachi will use footage of the film, due to released on June 29, in promoting its plasma screen televisions, of which it aims to sell almost 500,000 this year almost double that of last year.

Prices have fallen sharply in the flatscreen TV market as fierce competition has driven prices down leading to problems for electronics firms.

Earlier this week, Pioneer cut 2000 factory jobs worldwide after profits were hit. Pioneer said the disappointing figures were due to falling prices in plasma TVs and growing competition from low-cost rivals.

European electronics giant Philips was in similar difficulty as it also blamed losses on at its flatscreen television unit for contributing to a slump in first-quarter profits as net income plummeted to €117m (£80m) from €550m last time.

    ’War of the Worlds’ Illustrated

    thecelebritycafe.com reports:

    ’War of the Worlds’ Illustrated

The graphic novel has now gone Hollywood. Just in time for the release of the Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise blockbuster “War of the Worlds,” comes the release of the graphic novel by the same title, complete with a 90-second trailer debuting on the internet in May.

The graphic novel, which is basically a grownup comic-book, is becoming more popular. Sales of these novels are up 25 percent and have reached in excess of $200 million, according to “Icv2,” a print and online trade publication that tracks pop culture for retailers.

The “graphic” trailer will feature black and white panels from the novel and comes complete with a soundtrack, special effects and voice talent. Best Sellers Illustrated, the book’s publisher, produced the trailer in Hollywood.

    And from AWN Headline News:

War of the Worlds Graphic Novel to Get Trailer

Next month, the WAR OF THE WORLDS graphic novel will debut in bookstores across the nation and it will be promoted with a 90-second trailer, not unlike the way movies are promoted.

“We’re producing the trailer in Hollywood, and it will be complete with a soundtrack, special effects and voice talent,” said Aron Kessler, vp of Best Sellers Illustrated (www.bestsellersillustrated.com), the book’s publisher.

The trailer’s visuals include black-and-white panels from the graphic novel, many of which depict the havoc wreaked by Martian tripod war machines in and around New York City.

“H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi tale took place in London and its environs,” said author Stephen Stern, “but Orson Wells’ updated radio version that caused a nationwide panic was set in the New York metropolitan area. We’re doing the same thing, in a post-9/11 world.”

The WAR OF THE WORLDS trailer will debut on the Internet in early May, just weeks before the graphic novel arrives in bookstores and less than two months before Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise’s summer blockbuster based on the same source material hits theatres.

Tom and Steven Go to ‘War’

It’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and “Extra” was on the top-secret set of “War of the Worlds,” where Tom Cruise plays a dad trying to save his daughter, played by Dakota Fanning, from an alien invasion. (Don’t miss the video version of this story to see the explosive, never-before-seen footage from the set.)

Legendary director Steven Spielberg says “War of the Worlds” takes his movie making into a whole new dimension. “‘War of the Worlds’ really is about our deepest fears and the concept of what happens when this planet is invaded,” he revealed. “It’s not one of my sweet, benign alien odysseys. It’s the first time I’ve jumped directly in the center of a science fiction horror movie.”

We spoke to 11-year-old Dakota Fanning when shooting was just wrapping up, and she told us she loved working with Tom Cruise, but admitted she had an even better time with his children. “Actually Conner came the other day,” she told us. “I saw them, we did some things. We went to a play in New York. It was fun.”

And we had to ask Dakota: can the movie be as good as the previews look? “You’ll have to see it,” she insisted. “It comes out pretty soon.”

And you can see for yourself when “War of the Worlds” opens June 29th.
