Lindsay Lohan and Keri Russell in talks to star in M:I-3

Various websites (contactmusic, filmforce, accesshollywood) report that Lindsey Lohan is added to the M:I-3 cast, alongside Ving Rhames. Apparently Kenneth Branagh and Carrie-Anne Moss both remain serious possibilities for the thriller.

According to internet site Moviehole.net she was overheard talking about the film during a recent interview, which has yet to be broadcast. The redhead-gone-blonde told the interviewer, “Shhhh. You’re the first ones I’ve told,” according to the site. The actress let the news slip during a radio interview with 102.7 KIIS-FM in Los Angeles. She confirmed her involvement soon after to Access Hollywood.

“I actually met with J.J. Abrams, who is directing [the film],” said Lohan. “I’m a huge fan of … Lost and Alias, so hopefully, we will see what happens. If so, I’ll be in training for a few weeks, putting on some muscles.”

Regarding how it would feel to work alongside superstar Tom Cruise, the actress said, “It’s kind of an incredible feeling, I’m scared. If I do ‘Mission: Impossible 3′ that is going to be so exhilarating. I’m so excited, I just can’t wait to do stunts and get all into it.”

She’ll be heading for China, where shooting is expected to begin this fall. She wasn’t the producers’ first choice for the part however; she’s replacing Lost in Translation’s Scarlett Johannson, who recently pulled out of the project. Lohan’s character will most likely be a cute, ingénue ally of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) in the Mission: Impossible 3 story.

On the other hand reporter Michael Ausiello from TVGuide said Abrams told him yesterday that he’s talking to his former Felicity muse, Keri Russell, about joining the cast of MI:3 — although it’s unclear if that’s for the same role as Lohan. “There is a role that I think Keri would be spectacular for,” he says, “but there’s a process I must go through [before I cast her].”

UK Premiere

Tom at Cannes?

theedge.bostonherald.com and toronto.fashion-monitor.com:

The film festival rumor mill is working overtime with the notion that Tom Cruise will make a surprise appearance at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday to promote his new flick “War of the Worlds.”
Word is that Cruise, who is scheduled to show at the nearby Monte Carlos Grand Prix next week, will show up on the Croisette, the beachfront promenade, to pose under the mammoth “War of the Worlds” poster at the Carlton Hotel. With a captive audience of 4,000 journalists, Cruise knows that Cannes is, in the words of producer Joel Silver, the world’s stage for l0 days.
Whether Cruise will show with his new arm candy Katie Holmes is another question.

And Tom and Katie went to a gala at Santa Barbara hosted by Oprah Winfrey to pay tribute to pioneering black women, according to centredaily.com

Kathleen Kennedy on War of the Worlds

Empire magazine in Australia spoke to War of the Worlds producer Kathleen Kennedy about the highly-anticipated adaptation of H.G. Wells’s classic.

Asked whether the Steven Spielberg-directed film is coming too soon after Independence Day, Kennedy answered that “this is completely different. This is a deeply scary movie.”

The magazine says Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp have put the emphasis on terror, as dockyard mechanic Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and estranged kids Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin) roam across the US like refugees trying to stay ahead of the evil aliens. “This is very much from the point of view of this family,” adds Kennedy. “At the same time, there is this gigantic backdrop of what is going on and what they’re running from.”

Tim Robbins stars as astronomer Ogilvy, a holdover from Wells’s novel. “He has one of the most tense sequences in the movie, where he poses a real threat to Tom’s character,” says Kennedy. “He is only in it for 20 to 25 minutes but he is absolutely riveting.”

She also commented on why War of the Worlds has about 400-500 special effects shots, compared to a film such as Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith which boasts around 2200. “I think Steven tries to integrate things into a real, believable situation. You are not just witnessing a beautiful matte painting, you are actually involved in a real, visceral event,” Kennedy explained.

War of the Worlds opens in theaters on June 29th. For more info, check out the official website and stay tuned to alienglyph.com where something may still happen.

J.J. Abrams on Mission Impossible 3

About.com caught up with Lost and Alias executive producer J.J. Abrams and received an update on Mission: Impossible 3, which he will direct.

Abrams confirmed that Carrie-Anne Moss and Scarlett Johansson are no longer part of the cast, but he stayed mum about who will replace them and join Tom Cruise in the third installment.

“The script was rewritten,” he said. “I’m a huge fan of each actor that they cast originally, but to have kept the actors when we are reinventing the story would have been an odd process, to say, ‘Write a script with these people in mind for characters that haven’t been written.’ It just felt like we had to start over with a clean slate.”

Abrams said they are deep in pre-production and that shooting starts in July “all over the world… it’s going to be a pretty big scale.” Paramount is targeting a Summer 2006 release for the film.

Both actors are starring in summer film releases, “Bad News Bears” and “War of the Worlds.” “War of the Worlds” is set to open on June 29 and “Bad News Bears” is expected to open on July 22.
