UK site reader Dan reports that the July issue of Empire magazine features Jerry Maguire in their “50 Movie Moments to Make a Grown Man Cry”! Here’s what they said:

Number 2: “You had me at hello.”
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Director: Cameron Crowe
Stars: Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger
“We live in a cynical world.” So begins Jerry Maguire’s most important pitch: to win back his wife. And you know what? The man’s right. But what is so affecting about Cameron Crowe’s third entry is that unlike 99.9 per cent of will-they-won’t-they-of-course-they-flippin’-will rom-coms, Jerry and Dorothy got together in Act Two. Then he fucked it up. (We’ve all been there, part two.) So this is his redemption, y’see? More manipulative than Wilder, perhaps, but the master’s light touch is evident in Dorothy’s famous hush line. Quite possibly responsible for more marriage proposals than any other scene of the 90’s. “

And Here is another article about City on Fire.

Also MINORITY REPORT has been nominated as “Rental Title of the Year” by the Video Software Dealers Association Nominations are based on strong sales combined with exceptional rental capacity. Winners will be announced at VSDA’s annual convention in Las Vegas on July 29th.

The Entertainment Council, brainchild of former Jupiter Mayor Mary Hinton and Town Councilor Babs Henderson, has the goal of providing education and skills to young people looking for opportunities in TV or the film industry.

Tapping her connections to the industry, Hinton was able to convince actor Tom Cruise to give “a significant amount.” And Henderson’s advocacy has helped propel the momentum of the Entertainment Council’s activities.

Collateral

The wonderful Denise has sent me this:

Adam Sandler Weighed as Cruise Co-Star
By Zorianna Kit
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Adam Sandler, who stepped out of his usual comedic mold to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” last year, appears to be eyeing another left turn in his choice of characters.

On Wednesday night, Sandler was scheduled to meet with filmmaker Michael Mann to discuss the possibility of starring opposite Tom Cruise in the director’s “Collateral” for DreamWorks.

If he joins the project, Sandler would play Max, the meek cab driver who picks up a passenger (Cruise) who takes him hostage.

CRUISE AS ‘COLLATERAL’
June 3, 2003 | TOM CRUISE may be going bad. The superstar, according to Daily Variety, could take on the role of a hitman in director MICHAEL MANN’s next project, ‘Collateral.’ The movie reportedly happens during a single terrifying night in which a cab driver picks up a fare and winds up being taken hostage. The passenger then forces the cabbie to squire him around town while he takes care of business.

I also have a bunch of articles on the supposed break-up. I won’t publish because it’s not true. If ET announces it, I’ll believe. Otherwise, I wont. 😉

Tom and Penelope

Tom and Penelope AREN’T breaking up!

Both of the actors’ reps have denied the claims, but that hasn’t stopped The National Enquirer from declaring the couple are “one headline away from announcing their split”.

The rumour appears to have been fuelled by the absence of the former Mr Nicole Kidman from Cruz’s side on the red carpet in Cannes last month. Cruz excused her boyfriend’s absence, saying he had work commitments. But the reports suggest he had finished filming The Last Samurai in New Zealand and headed straight back to the US rather than join her in France.

The Enquirer has alluded to the oft-repeated rumour he still holds a candle for his flame-haired ex. Other sources have claimed that Cruz’s pressure for a commitment was the catalyst for the split.

Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Field, has denied that the couple are about to split and the actor’s publicist, Pat Kingsley, put it more strongly.

“This story is absolutely not true,” she insisted. “They are very much together. “Both of them are spending time together on the east coast [of America] right now.”

Thanks Betty for the article!!

Tom Cruise’s new project!!

Death Becomes him

Is this a match made in heaven? Director Michael Mann has announced his next project – and he’s looking for Tom Cruise to be his leading man. Mann has been linked to various films since finishing work on Ali – among them one on a superhero on the pull – but it was announced today that Collateral will be the first one to begin shooting.

The action, according to Variety, takes place all on one night when a taxi driver picks up a contract killer who forces him at gunpoint to drive him around Los Angeles in pursuit of his quarry. Mann apparently wants Cruise to play the killer, which will be a refreshing change. It’s been some time since we saw Cruise play an out-and-out baddy (and before you email us – his role in Magnolia doesn’t count – that was unlikeable rather than evil).

Although Cruise hasn’t signed on the dotted line, it’s expected he will come on board very soon – both he and Mann have been trying to find a suitable project to work on together for some time.

Cruising for a bruising
Actor threatens MP over ‘chicken’ comment

Tom Cruise has lashed out at tourism minister Kim Howells for suggesting the pint-sized actor is ‘too chicken to fly’ to Cannes. In a misguided attempt at boosting the number of visitors to the festival, and Europe in general, Howells had laid into Hollywood stars for their refusal to fly. Sadly for him, he made the mistake of not checking how many US actors made it to the film festival (quite a few), and of singling out Cruise for criticism. His lawyer immediately threatened to sue over the ‘false and defamatory’ comments made about the ‘courageous’ actor. ‘Mr Howells had better cross the street if he sees me or Tom,’ he said gleefully. Cruise rubbished the outspoken minister’s comments, blaming his absence from Cannes on ‘work commitments,’ while a publicist observed wisely: ‘It’s pretty hard to be in two places at the same time.’ ‘These people portray themselves as great action heroes,’ Howells had scoffed. ‘One would assume they had the balls to do a simple thing like fly to Europe. They love playing great heroic role with their big guns and big chests.’ Along with many of her purportedly Europe-fearing colleagues, including Austrian-born Arnie, Spaniard Penelope Cruz – cheerfully free of the testicles and big chest Howells had ascribed her – confirmed Cruise really did have other commitments.

On Guard!

Up until now the only proof we’ve had that Tom Cruise has even been making a film down in New Zealand has been his word and a couple of slightly insubstantial teaser trailers featuring wind-chimes and groovy Japanese symbols. However, we’re pleased to announce that the first full trailer to Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai is here and it’s looking rather good.

If you’re expecting to see Cruise take to the air like Chow Yun-Fat, you’re in for some disappointment, and truth be told there’s not even a wealth of samurai swordplay on display. What there is though is a pretty impressive rendering of nineteenth century Japan (the costume designer deserves a knighthood) and a hint of bigger and better things to come. Highlights include beardy Cruise looking sensitive yet deadly and an appetite whetting shot of him charging into battle in full samurai armour. Click Here.

Tom fights back…

Tom Cruise has hit back at Dr Kim Howells, Britain’s minister for tourism, who claimed that the Hollywood action hero was too scared of terrorism to fly to Britain, by pointing out that he is a licenced pilot.
Dr Howells criticised “swashbuckling heroes like Tom Cruise” who were “too frightened to fly” in the wake of 11 September and the threat posed by Al-Qaida terrorists.
But, when he said that Cruise lacked the “balls” to fly, his attack prompted the star of Top Gun to fire back. “Afraid of flying? He’s a pilot,” Cruise’s spokeswoman said. “His airplane is his second home.” Cruise regularly takes the controls of a £20 million Challenger jet.
“Tom was over there (Britain) this past year promoting Minority Report,” the spokeswoman said. “In fact, he was all over Europe. Maybe he (Dr Howells) said it because Mr Cruise wasn’t in Cannes? But that’s because he’s shooting The Last Samurai in New Zealand. It’s pretty hard to be in two places at the same time.”

On a more merrier note, Minority Report won 3 Saturn Awards. Best director: Steven Spielberg, Best supporting Actress: Samantha Morton and Best Science fiction film.
