Tom’s Mission: Tell As Little As Possible

The most shocking thing about Tom Cruise’s publicist confirming Nov. 18 as the date for the actor’s marriage to Katie Holmes? Simply the fact that it’s being confirmed.

Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most secretive stars — except when he wants publicity for his movies. Yet, his spokesman Arnold Robinson surprised many by saying, ”Those details are correct” — responding to a Us Weekly report about wedding guests being told to reserve the Nov. 16-19 weekend for the Cruise-Holmes nuptials at an unidentified Italian location.

In addition, famed Italian designer Giorgio Armani confirms he’s creating both Holmes’ gown and Cruise’s wedding suit.

But don’t be carried away by this new Cruise ”openness.” It has very strict limits.

”Even by revealing the date and mentioning the country … a lot is still unanswered. Italy is a big country, and no one — no one! — knows how to organize security like Tom,” a close Cruise source told this column Tuesday.

”Trust me. This is being planned better than a military operation. In fact, I’d suggest President Bush hire Tom to run things in Iraq. It probably would be going better if he was in charge,” the source added — only half-kidding.
