Hundreds wait for hours to be in Spielberg film

wstm.com:

ATHENS, N.Y. Hundreds of people shivered in line for hours for a chance to be an extra in a Spielberg film that’s going to be shot in the Hudson Valley village of Athens.

The film is a remake of “War of the Worlds,” starring Tom Cruise. Paramount Pictures plans to shoot a scene in Athens, along the Hudson River about 30 miles south of Albany.

The scene will feature crowds fleeing a Martian invasion. Athens was chosen because of its riverfront location. The scene includes a 168-foot car ferry, and the movie-makers needed a place where it could be docked.

People who lined up outside in the frigid air called it a once in a lifetime opportunity to land a small spot on the big screen.

Paramount will begin filming the Athens scene early next month. “War of the Worlds” is expected to hit theaters next summer.
