I spy Cruise and Diaz

This is from an interview with Cameron Diaz about her new movie with Tom.

The film in question is tentatively entitled Wichita (expect that to change). It’s an action romantic comedy — the same sub-genre as, say, Mr. and Mrs. Smith or True Lies — about a woman whose bad luck in men takes a turn for the worse (or better) when she falls for a secret agent. Cruise would play the spy, Diaz the woman with a history of man trouble.

“It’ll be a blast. I’m really looking forward to it. Tom is awesome and it’ll be great to work with him again. He’ll be wonderful in this part. We’ll have a great time,” says Diaz, who is nevertheless pragmatic enough to add, “I never believe anything’s happening until I’m on the set. You never know what can happen.”

Diaz’s caution is justified. For the past several months, various studios have been courting Cruise — a signal his fortunes have improved after the commercial success of Valkyrie. Other projects that had been vying for his approval included Motorcade, about an automotive assassination attempt on the U.S. president; The Tourist, a spy yarn that would have co-starred Charlize Theron; and David Cronenberg’s adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller The Matarese Circle, which would have paired Cruise with Denzel Washington. Presumably Cruise may still make one or more of these projects, but for right now, it appears his teaming with Diaz comes first. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) it’s expected to shoot later this year for a release next summer.
