‘Valkyrie’ tops foreign box office

Pic scored best in Germany with $3.4 million

Military thriller “Valkyrie” landed atop the foreign box office, while the weekend saw only a smattering of international expansions of awards contenders in the wake of Thursday’s Oscar nominations announcement.

Highlight of the frame came from “Slumdog Millionaire,” which continued to amaze in the U.K. with a 6% hike in its third frame to $3.8 million for a $13.9 million Brit cume. “Slumdog” also posted a solid $1.9 million Indian launch for Fox, coming in second behind Sony’s Bollywood sequel “Raaz 2: The Mystery Continues” — marking the third-best launch for a Hollywood pic in India after “Spider-Man 3” and “Casino Royale.”

Movie Q&A with Tom Cruise

Q DID you know this story?

A NO, I just knew pieces of it. The bomb under the table, I knew how that ended, but I still found it an utterly compelling film. Reading it in history, it was like a suspense thriller.
And to see when we finally finished the film and put it before an American audience was quite an experience.
I’m looking forward to going to Europe and Germany to share it with them also.

Q HAVE your feelings changed about Germany since making this movie?

Tom Cruise in Amsterdam for movie premiere

Hollywood Actor Tom Cruise is in Amsterdam to attend the Dutch premiere of his latest film Valkyrie on Thursday evening.

There’s great interest in the movie in the Netherlands, as it features two Dutch actresses, Carice van Houten and Halina Reijn. They will be accompanying Mr Cruise to the premiere, as will the movie’s director Bryan Singer. Tom Cruise plays German colonel Claus von Stauffenberg who led a group of officers in an assassination attempt against Adolph Hitler in 1943.

Carice van Houten plays Von Stauffenberg’s wife Nina, and her fellow Dutch actress and longtime friend Halina Rein plays the secretary Margarethe von Oven. The two had previously appeared together in another Tom Cruise movie, Black Book. Both found it a tremendous experience to work with international actors.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: Valkyrie in the UK

Last night they were busy at the Berlin premiere of “Valkyrie.” And this evening Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are on the other side of the English Channel giving the Brits their chance to see it for the first time.

The “Risky Business” stud and his “Dawson’s Creek” darling looked blissful, as always, as they posed for the paparazzi outside London’s Odeon Leicester Square.

Cruise wore a tie-less black suit while Holmes kept it conservative-yet-sexy in a multi-textured sleeveless black dress with black stockings and black heels.

And as previously reported by the Gossip Girls, Katie will be returning to New York City next month to film a new movie called “The Extra Man.”

Tom “a dreamy guy to do business with”

British comedian Eddie Izzard, who plays a Second World War German officer in the film about a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler, said that Tom Cruise’s reputation as a Scientologist was not an issue when they worked together on Valkyrie. Izzard said:

“He is a Scientologist and that’s fine and there are people who are Catholics and I have differences with what they think. I’m not sure exactly what the Scientologist thing is. Lots of people have different faiths. I personally don’t believe in any organised Gods because I don’t see any organisation in the way the world has progressed.

Bill Nighy, who plays another of the conspirators in the film, also dismissed Cruise’s religion. Nighy said:

“He was wonderful to work with, exemplary and I would have no idea what his system of belief was any more if he was a Jewish man or he had embraced Islam, any more than I would know what Eddie’s thoughts on God were.

“It was not a feature of the working experience. He was a dreamy guy to do business with, he was inspirational and courteous and generous to everyone around him.”
