‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Shoot on Hiatus After Tom Cruise Breaks Ankle

Bad news for Tom. I hope he recovers soon!

Tom Cruise’s accident on the set of Mission: Impossible 6 has left the actor with a broken ankle.

“During production on the latest Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise broke his ankle while performing a stunt,” Paramount said Wednesday in a statement. “Production will go on hiatus while Tom makes a full recovery.”

The action tentpole remains on schedule to open July 27, 2018.

“Tom wants to thank you all for your concern and support and can’t wait to share the film with everyone next summer,” the statement continued.

The actor, who is known for doing his own stunts, was injured this past weekend in London when jumping between buildings and slamming into a wall, leaving him limping. According to M:I6 director Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise didn’t miss the mark and was always supposed to hit the wall. However, on the fourth take, Cruise hit at a slightly different angle and broke his ankle.

McQuarrie also tweeted that “Tom is on the mend.” He also offered assurances that the film will meet its release date. Separately, McQuarrie explained the details of the stunt in an interview with Empire.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that production would be delayed by eight to nine weeks due to the incident.

The accident, which took place on the roof of Baynard House, an office block in the Blackfriars district of London, occurred Saturday. Sources say this was day 88 of the Mission: Impossible 6 shoot, which was due to carry on for another two months and into October.

Producers are keeping stages at the busy Leavesdon studios outside of London on hold to ensure they have them available when production starts again.

Mission: Impossible 6 also stars Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Angela Bassett and Alec Baldwin.

The 55-year-old actor has a history of performing difficult stunts, with his Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation plane sequence even serving as a key point in the film’s marketing. The opening scene featured Cruise’s Ethan Hunt hanging on to an Airbus 400 as it taxies down a runway and eventually takes off.

Tom Cruise Has Been Training for a ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Stunt for a Year

Exciting news about the next Mission: Impossible movie. I can’t wait to find out what the stunt is!
COLLIDER.COM Exclusive:

When it comes to stunts and the Mission: Impossible franchise, the motto is “go big or go home.” The ante was upped considerably in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which saw Tom Cruise literally hang from the tallest building in the world. Somehow, Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie topped that in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation by hanging Cruise outside of a plane while it took off from the runway. Again, insane. So what in the world do they have planned for Mission: Impossible 6, which McQuarrie is again writing and directing? Apparently the biggest stunt Cruise has ever done in his career.

Collider’s Steve Weintraub recently spoke with Skydance Media CEO David Ellison at SXSW for the premiere of the upcoming sci-fi thriller Life, and during their interview Ellison also offered an update on Mission: Impossible 6, which he’s producing. He revealed that filming on the sequel begins on April 10th and will be shooting in Paris, London, and New Zealand, and when asked what kind of stunt they have planned as the centerpiece this time around, Ellison said Cruise has already been training since Rogue Nation came out:

“We’re thrilled. Chris is back, obviously, writing and directing after Rogue Nation. We could not be more excited about the character Henry Cavill’s going to play. And I will say after the Burj [Khalifa] we thought it was going to be impossible to top that stunt, and then Tom did the A380 for the plane. What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that’s come before. It is absolutely unbelievable—he’s been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It’s gonna be mind-blowing.”

Cavill’s casting was already exciting given the spy/comedic chops he showed in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. but Ellison’s comments here are even more encouraging. And as for that stunt, the fact that Cruise has already been training for a year is ridiculous. Ellison went on to explain Cruise’s philosophy behind doing so many practical stunts himself:

“It all comes from the best place. It is all about entertaining an audience. Tom’s entire mantra for hanging on the side of the Burj Khalifa or the A380 or literally holding your breath for six minutes underwater to do the Taurus sequence is, in a world of massive [visual] effects, he said the audience can tell when it’s you on a green screen or when you’re actually doing it live. And the tension, because the stunt is real, actually puts the audience where Ethan Hunt is where they are in the movie. He said that’s why he does it; it’s all about entertaining an audience and it makes the movie better.”

Rogue Nation shook up the franchise formula by putting the film’s biggest stunt at the beginning of the movie, and while Ellison couldn’t say where this Mission: Impossible 6 stunt would come into play, he did says there was debate over where to put the Burj Khalifa sequence in Ghost Protocol:

“I cannot say for M:I 6, but on Rogue Nation it was a conversation that was ongoing about whether or not it was in the opening or the middle of the movie. Obviously in Ghost Protocol there was a lot of conversation about should the Burj be at the end of the movie? Because it was obviously the biggest stunt in the film, and it really was just story drives everything. That’s the amazing thing about working with somebody who’s talented as Chris McQuarrie, who is a brilliant, brilliant screenwriter as well as a director, is story drives every single decision.”

Ellison said the production schedule for Mission: Impossible 6 will be similar to the other movies—90-100 days, filming in three countries—so it’ll be interesting to see if news breaks of this stunt during filming or if they’re able to keep it under wraps. Either way, it sounds like we’re in for a treat when the sequel hits theaters on July 27, 2018.

Mission: Impossible 6 Gets a Release Date for Summer 2018

Great news everyone! Paramount and Skydance have set a release date for Mission: Impossible 6 for July 27th, 2018.

Christopher McQuarrie will write and direct the sequel.

Besides Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson is confirmed to reprise her role.

Tom Cruise Closes ‘Mission Impossible 6’ Deal, Pre-Production to Resume

It’s official! M:I 6 will start shooting next year.

Light the match and cue the music.

After contentious dealmaking halted pre-production on Mission: Impossible 6, earlier this summer, Tom Cruise is on the verge of closing his deal to return to the Paramount action-thriller franchise.

Cruise’s return for a sixth installment in a movie series that he has been toplining and producing since 1996 seemed like a no-brainer, but negotiations with Paramount took an unexpected turn with the studio, which was co-financing the movie with Skydance, digging in on things such as backend profit participation.

The project was heading towards a January 2017 start when the pause button was pushed.

Now sources tell THR that issues have been resolved and Mission is being re-started. Spring 2017 will be the new start time.

Christopher McQuarrie, who reinvigorated the franchise with the fifth installment, wrote the script and will direct.

Christopher McQuarrie Eyeing Return for ‘Mission: Impossible 6’

VARIETY EXCLUSIVE. Mission: Impossible 6 may have found it’s director: Christopher McQuarrie.

Following the massive success of “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” Paramount and Skydance are hoping to stay in business with writer-director Christopher McQuarrie. According to sources close to the situation, McQuarrie will return to write “Mission: Impossible 6,” as well as possibly direct the next installment.

The studio and reps for McQuarrie have declined to comment, but several sources with knowledge of the situation say talks are progressing towards a deal being closed, with one insider saying that the studio plans to get production up and running by next August.

Tom Cruise is set to star with the studio also holding an option for Rebecca Ferguson to reprise her “Rogue Nation” role of Ilsa Faust. Cruise is currently filming “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” in New Orleans. Following the success of “Rogue Nation,” Paramount made it clear they wanted to move fast to get the next installment of the popular “M:I” franchise into production sometime next year.

If McQuarrie’s deal closes, it would mark a major milestone for the franchise, which has never had a director helm more than one installment.

While he has plenty in development, McQuarrie has nothing pressing on his slate that would impede him from working on an “M:I 6” script and prepping the film for a summer 2016 shoot.

‘Mission: Impossible 6′: Paramount Backs Tom Cruise for Another Sequel

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation has just been released (and not even everywhere yet!) and Mission: Impossible 6 is already getting a greenlight!

Paramount Pictures vice chairman Rob Moore is ready for more Ethan Hunt, strongly endorsing Tom Cruise’s recent announcement that “Mission: Impossible 6″ is in the works.

“We’re very happy to be developing this movie with Tom,” Moore told Variety. “There’s no question that Ethan Hunt deserves another film.”

The veteran executive was basking in the glow of a $121 million global opening for “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” — $56 million in the U.S. and another $65 million from 40% of international markets. “The international brand is as strong as ever,” he added.

It was the first public comment by Paramount execs — who tend to take a measured approach in discussing future films. Even as “Rogue Nation” opened on Friday, the studio was insisting that its tracking showed a $40 million U.S. opening, even though the final figure turned out to be 40% higher.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, said he’s not surprised that another “Mission: Impossible” is in the works.

“I think it’s very smart,” he added. “Given the performance of ‘Rogue Nation,’ there has to be another movie.”

Cruise revealed plans on Tuesday to return in the Ethan Hunt role for a sixth “Mission: Impossible,” asserting that shooting could start as early as a year from now.

“We’re starting to work on it now. We’ll probably start shooting it next summer,” he told host Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show.”

The previous four “Mission: Impossible” films have grossed a combined $2 billion at the worldwide box office. “Rogue Nation,” which carries a $150 million pricetag, is produced by Cruise along with J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.

Christopher McQuarrie directed from a screenplay he wrote with Drew Pearce. Each “Mission: Impossible” has employed a different director. The previous films were directed by Brian De Palma, John Woo, Abrams and Brad Bird.

Cruise, 53, is currently shooting drug thriller “Mena” with Doug Liman directing. He also said during the show Tuesday that he’s discussed an “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel with McQuarrie and Liman, who wrote and directed the sci-fier, respectively.
