Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh is joining Tom Cruise and Carrie-Anne Moss in “Mission: Impossible 3” for C/W Prods. and Paramount Pictures.

Branagh, who recently appeared in a London production of David Mamet’s play “Edmund” and the feature film “Five Children and It,” has signed on for the spy action-adventure. Although there is an expectation that he will be unmasked as one of the villains, few details were available on the character Branagh will play.

Further casting is under way on the sequel, which is due to go into production in late summer. Although there has been speculation that Philip Seymour Hoffman would be joining the cast, that possibility has apparently ended because of a scheduling conflict.

Frank Darabont is penning the script for the third installment of the blockbuster, which Joe Carnahan will direct.

In the feature, Cruise will reprise his role as agent Ethan Hunt.

Branagh’s other recent credits include “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Conspiracy” and “Rabbit-Proof Fence.”

He is repped by Judy Hofflund of managers Hofflund/Polone.

And last is the news reported by Fox23 (among others) that Tom’s lawyers have threatened to sue British newspaper The Independent – over quotes made about his work on movie Eyes Wide Shut. Tom is reportedly furious the publication ran quotes from drama coach Susan Batson, who told the paper she had assisted both Cruise and ex-wife Kidman to “give a convincing sexual performance” in the movie. Cruise’s attorneys have demanded a retraction.

Tom found a house in Berlin

Tom not only went looking for places to shoot Mission: Impossible III but also went looking for a place to rent. According to imdb.com he plans to rent the former home of Swiss ambassador Thomas Borer from German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop. The high-security house in Berlin features high security fences, video surveillance and motion sensors that guard the property. It is estimated to cost about $7.5 million. The estate agent says, “Yes, there has been an inquiry. Tom Cruise even wants a helicopter landing area, but that could be a bit difficult as the grounds are relatively small.”

Access Hollywood tells us more on the locations for MI:3.

An upbeat Tom Cruise was on an overseas “mission,” scouting shoot locations for the third installment of his hit action franchise, “Mission: Impossible.” “We will be here for a few days and it depends on how many locations we get here, so it could be many months,” said Cruise.

The public appearance marked the first time Tom has spoken to the press since his split from girlfriend, Penelope Cruz. And though Tom and Penelope have called it quits they still remain friends. Penelope even stopped to visit Tom while he was in Berlin. “She’s shooting in Morocco and came by to say, ‘Hi,’ and hang out,” said Cruise.

Sporting a New York Yankees hat, Tom was even open to answering questions about his post-Penelope life saying things were “great.”

One of Tom’s European stops included The Reichstag, however Tom was more of the attraction then the historic building with one fan even offering Tom his own scarf. The cold weather couldn’t keep Cruise’s devotees away, prompting Tom to pose for photo after photo. Tom then turned tourist taking his own snapshots.

Combined, Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” and “Mission: Impossible 2” have earned over $1 billion worldwide, and Tom is intent on making his third installment even more incredible. “Right now we are just working, looking at locations, developing a visual style of picture,” said Cruise about his excellent adventure.

From Berlin to Africa, Tom scouted seaports and remote villages for just the precise “MI 3” locations. Tom also stopped off in Accra, Jamestown in the country of Ghana where he was recognized by the native children. They were captivated by his presence and eager to show off some of their own action movie stunt moves to the superstar.

Tom’s hopeful that his overseas scouting blitz will result in just the right look for the film. “You see how we certainly emulated the architecture in ‘Minority Report’ and it’s really good for the story…They are beautiful locations. I hope it works out,” he said.
