M:i:III Trailer Debuting on MTV Networks
Source: Paramount Pictures March 15, 2006

Paramount Pictures will premiere an exclusive look at this summer’s highly anticipated action-thriller, Mission: Impossible: III, as Tom Cruise introduces the new trailer across MTV Networks on Thursday, March 16, it was announced today by Gerry Rich, president of worldwide motion picture marketing for Paramount Pictures. The film, starring Tom Cruise and directed by J.J. Abrams, the creator of Lost and Alias, opens in theaters nationwide on May 5, 2006.

The trailer will air simultaneously on MTV, MTV2, VH1, CMT, BET, and Spike TV during the 10pm-11pm block on Thursday, March 16, one day before it runs in any movie theater. The exclusive material will also be available on the Internet at mtv.com, mtv2.com, vh1.com, cmt.com, spiketv.com, and at iFilm.

Commenting on the announcement, Rich said, “Tom and J.J. have come through with an amazing action movie and we think viewers across MTV networks will agree that ‘M:i:III’ is the first must-see event film of the summer. When you’ve got the goods, it’s exciting to be able to share it with the audience in a special way. We’re thrilled to be pulling out all the stops with our partners at the MTV Networks.”

Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & J.J. Abrams wrote the script for the film, based on the television series created by Bruce Geller. “M:i:III” is produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner. The film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Billy Crudup, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell, Maggie Q and Laurence Fishburne.

CanMag.com has nice updates about M:I-III! Their site says:
Paramount Pictures have alerted us that they not only released a couple video interviews for Mission: Impossible III but that Tom Cruise and JJ Abrams are ready to take questions from the fans as well.

    M:I:3 Videos and Questions
iFilm has recently posted two new exclusive videos for Mission: Impossible III. One video is a video interview with JJ Abrams and the other is a video interview with Philip Seymour Hoffman; who recently earned an Academy Award for his role in Capote.
Though there were some, including myself, who were unsure about seeing Hoffman play the role of a villain, the previews of his character shown in the trailer look pretty solid. I remember Hoffman as the gay-as-a-fox Scotty J. in Boogie Nights and the happy little helper, Brandt, in The Big Lebowski; so seeing him in this opposite role should be something else.
The video interview with Hoffman is quick and seems to feature more little quotes from Tom Cruise, as he talks about Hoffman, than Hoffman himself. If the clip is a little too short for you, iFilm has a long, eleven minute, clip interview with director JJ Abrams. The interviewer asks Abrams questions like how similar M:I:III will be to the television series and what changes Abrams made to the franchise in order to create an even bigger third installment. The director also goes on to state that the cast of characters behind Ethan Hunt will be getting some extra attention in this installment.

iFilm then asked the most obvious question– Why Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain (especially since he is coming directly off Capote)? An Oscar-winner starring next to Tom Cruise is not a bad combination.

Besides the clips, Paramount Pictures told us that they have teamed up with Yahoo! Movies to allow fans to send questions to both Tom Cruise and JJ Abrams for Mission: Impossible III. You can either send your questions to imfqa@yahoo.com directly or head over to Yahoo! Movies for more info.
Mission: Impossible 3 comes to theatres on May 5th, 2006. Tom Cruise claims we couldn’t have a better film to kick off summer.

ABC also reports Philip Seymour Hoffmans role:
Theater owners got a sneak peek Tuesday of two key scenes in Cruise’s summer sequel “Mission: Impossible III,” in which his undercover operative Ethan Hunt takes on a villain played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won an Academy Award this month for playing author Capote in “Capote.”

Director J.J. Abrams, creator of TV’s “Lost” and “Alias” who makes his big-screen debut with “Mission: Impossible III,” told a crowd at the theater-owner convention ShoWest that he set out to make an action film that put characters first, spectacle second.

“The reason the action works so strongly is that J.J. tells a story, and what drives the story are the characters, the people,” Paula Wagner, Cruise’s producing partner, said in an interview with The Associated Press alongside Abrams. “The action happens because the people are trying to get something accomplished, get something done, and that’s great storytelling.”

Distributor Paramount showed off an exchange in which Hoffman’s character, imprisoned by the Impossible Missions Force, delivers a chilling threat to Cruise’s Hunt.
“Do you have a wife, a girlfriend?” Hoffman asks Cruise. “Because if you do, you know what I’m going to do next? I’m going to find her. I’m going to find her, and I’m going to hurt her. I’m going to make her bleed and call out your name. … And then I’m going to kill you right in front of her.”

Abrams also presented a fiery sequence in which Hoffman’s allies try to rescue him from Cruise and his gang, which includes returning co-star Ving Rhames.

Tom Cruise is a Tough Guy

    MoviesOnline:
Jerry “Golden Boy” Trimble, a real world champion fighter and actor, speaks very highly of the fighting techniques displayed by Tom Cruise during their fight sequence filmed for the upcoming release of Mission Impossible III. J.J. Abrams, the director of “Mission Impossible III”, chose champion Jerry Trimble, Jr. to do the dramatic fight scene with Tom Cruise. (…) Jerry has been in over twenty feature films, half of which he played lead. The list includes “Heat”, (playing alongside Al Pacino) and “Charlie’s Angels” (nominated for the Taurus Award in the category of best fight). His more recent roles include the yet to be released “M:i:lll”, where Jerry participates in a one on one fight scene with Tom Cruise, of which, Jerry stated that Tom Cruise “exhibits incredible fighting skills for a non-professional fighter”. Additional recent roles include “War of the Worlds” “The Last Sentinel”, and voice-over narration for “Fortitude and Glory, Angelo Dundee and his fighters.”

    Tom saves Yahoo demo

    News.com reports:

Yahoo Chief Executive Terry Semel’s glitch-riddled keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show on Friday was saved by Tom Cruise and Ellen DeGeneres–and by making Microsoft Windows the butt of jokes.

While trying to demonstrate the new Yahoo Go TV, which allows people to access Yahoo content and services through a Windows XP-based PC connected to a TV, the Internet connection failed. Executives tried to ad lib until Semel called his surprise guest, Cruise, to the stage.

Cruise, twirling sun glasses in his hand, told the audience he was there to help his old friend Semel before showing a trailer of his new movie, “Mission Impossible III,” which is due in U.S. theaters in May.

Afterward, Cruise, Semel, Marco Boerries, Yahoo’s senior vice president of Connected Life, and Dan Rosensweig, the company’s chief operating officer, milled about the stage awkwardly, patting each other on the back.

A man in the audience yelled, “Play it again,” and Cruise said he wanted to see how fast Yahoo’s system could replay the movie. “Press the button,” he said, and Cruise could once again be seen in the action-adventure film dodging blasts and kissing women.

After Cruise left the stage, Semel said, “I guess if you’re going to have a demo glitch, (there is no) better way to follow it up than with Tom Cruise.”

    More Shanghai!

    Yahoo:
Actor Tom Cruise got a taste of Asian cellphone etiquette in Shanghai when a local reporter took a call in the middle of his press event on the city’s historic Bund on Wednesday. Such chatter is common in much of Asia, where people routinely talk on their phones in the middle of news briefings and many other public gatherings. But the American superstar, in town to shoot scenes for his latest “Mission: Impossible” movie, took it all in his stride, borrowing the phone from the surprised reporter to talk to the woman caller. “Hello. Xie xie. Ni hao. How are you?” said an amused Cruise, dressed in black, exhausting his limited Chinese vocabulary before going on to ask if the woman — the reporter’s wife — was at work and about her marital status.

    (yahoo also has details:
It was “Mission: Unpredictable” for Tom Cruise when a reporter pulled out a cell phone and the actor insisted on talking to the person on the other end of the line. “Put her on the phone. I want to talk to her,” Cruise told the journalist, who sheepishly called someone Cruise assumed to be the man’s girlfriend. “Hello. Xiexie. Ni hao. Are you good?” said Cruise, handling the Chinese words for “thank you” and “hello” with ease. “Are you good? Are you working?” he asked. “Are you going to get engaged? Soon? Maybe?” Cruise was speaking to journalists atop the historic Bund 18 building as bells tolled and horns blared from ships passing on the nearby Huangpu River on Wednesday after wrapping up scenes for the new “Mission: Impossible” film, due in theaters next year. “Oh, you’re married?” asked the translator, who stepped in to help the conversation along. “Tell her I wish her happiness,” Cruise said. “Xiexie, bye-bye,” said the 43-year-old actor before handing the phone back to the reporter. Asked about his own plans to wed pregnant fiancee Katie Holmes, Cruise replied, “You want to know where we’re gonna get married? The exact date? The exact place? The color dress, designer?” He added: “You know, we haven’t set a date. … It will happen next year.”)

Cruise and his crew were meeting the media after wrapping up two weeks of shooting for “Mission: Impossible III.” The film was being shot in Shanghai and nearby Xitang, a town criss-crossed by canals, with other scenes in Italy, Germany and the United States. The visit to China by one of the world’s biggest stars, who is traveling with pregnant fiancee Katie Holmes, has created a massive buzz in the local media, where the actor is known affectionately as “Tang Ge,” or “Big Brother Tom.”
Cruise, whose credits include last year’s “War of the Worlds” and two previous “Mission: Impossible” movies, said during the briefing that he and Holmes, who plan to get married, have yet to set a date but that the wedding will happen next year.

During his brief China trip, Cruise has been spotted at a number of trendy Shanghai hang-outs, including a swanky restaurant on the Bund, and a Sichuan eaterie where he reportedly paid more than 5,000 yuan for a meal — an astronomical sum by Chinese standards.
The producers of “M:I3” reportedly payed 100 million yuan for the use of Xitang, which was sealed off to the public during filming. Total production costs for the film are expected to exceed $150 million.

    SPECTACULAR
Shanghai’s Gotham-esque Jinmao tower, the country’s tallest building and home to the Grand Hyatt hotel, and the city’s futuristic Pearl TV tower, will both feature in the movie. So will the Huangpu River, which snakes through the city before feeding into the Yangtze.
Cruise gushed about the city’s spectacular vistas and the general thrill of his brief trip, saying he planned to come back in the future to see more of the country. “It’s spectacular. It’s unbelievable,” he said. “It’s going to look extraordinary on film.”

The first two “Mission: Impossible” movies made a combined $396 million at the North American box office. The new film is directed by J.J. Abrams, the creator of hit TV series Lost. It is scheduled for release next summer, a year later than originally planned due to production difficulties. The movie’s makers are negotiating to simultaneously release “M:I3” in the United States and China, in part due to the high rate of piracy in a market where films often show up on pirated discs just days after their worldwide premieres.

TheAge adds: Speaking to journalists atop the historic Bund 18 building as bells tolled and horns blared from ships passing on the nearby Huangpu River, Cruise said he finished shooting the China sequences for Mission Impossible 3 a couple days early. Both said they were warned that filming in China would be difficult due to language barriers, but found that working with the local crew went smoother than expected. “They enabled us to work at a terrific speed,” Cruise said. “I’m going to tell our friends how terrific and skilled the workers are.”
