Tom Cruise Roasts Matt Lauer On Today Show

Matt Lauer and Tom Cruise

As Matt Lauer was being roasted by the Friar’s Club on Friday, a special guest showed up to take some jabs at the “Today” show host – Tom Cruise.

Three years after Cruise and Lauer’s infamous interview on “Today,” where the actor called the host “glib” while discussing his views on psychiatric medicine and Scientology, Cruise hit the Friar’s Club for a little roast revenge.

According to Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell, who was inside the roast, following a taped message from Ryan Seacrest, Cruise was introduced, walked out and hugged Lauer on stage.
“Everyone in the room was shocked,” one audience member reveals to OK!. “Tom just walked across the stage after a video segment.”

Tom told the audience that he would do anything for his “good friend Matt.” He then said he is the one person in the world who knows where Matt Lauer is (referring to the “Today” show “Where in the World is Matt Lauer” segments).

Cruise said Lauer was the man “we wake up to every morning — only because we had the channel on NBC before we fell asleep.”

“Matt and I are best friends; we do everything together,” Tom told the crowd as he flipped through doctored photos of him and Matt jet skiing, barbecuing and sitting together on the couch. “Which some of you may find surprising because we had that, uh… you know
“When we can’t get together, we’ll talk on the phone two, three, four times a day and say, ‘Matt are you watching this?’ And he’ll say, ‘yeah.’ And we’ll sit there.”

He then ribbed Lauer, saying “My life is made up of jumping from international film set to fancy party, from fancy party to international film set,”
“You have found happiness doing the same thing everyday. You sit on a couch all day and interview the car from Knight Rider and cook radishes with Rachael Ray until Father Time and GE think you are too old and too boring!” Cruise said.

“You’re the one who told me to talk about Katie Holmes on Oprah!” he said. “Matt gave me some advice: ‘When people come on my show, I don’t want them talking about their dopey movie. Tom, don’t be glib. You are in love. Talk about (Katie). People will love you for it,’” Cruise said.

The actor also recounted a golf outing Lauer had with O.J. Simpson. “Matt said to O.J., ‘If people have your memorabilia, go back and get the (stuff) back. People will love you for it.’”

Cruise later dragged NBC chief Jeff Zucker into the joke, saying that Lauer told Zucker, “Jay Leno’s contract is up. Why don’t you let him go while everyone still thinks he’s funny. People will love you for it.”

After joking that Matt had been the one who suggested that his former co-host Katie Couric leave her Today Show gig, Tom wrapped things up by saying, “In front of all these people, I just want you to know I cant believe I flew all the way out here… Now lose my number, you glib putz.” Tom, in true Ryan Seacrest fashion, ended his speech saying, “Cruise out.”

Lauer embraced the actor and in rebuttal to Tom’s roasting, after the Osar nominee exited, Matt said, “Come on, Tom… Stay. We can get a booster seat!” When he realized Tom wasn’t returning, Al Roker, the master of ceremonies for the surprise roast, quickly responded “Oh, guess his spaceship has to leave.”

According to a Friar’s Club source, Tom wrote his own material and the Scoop can attest that he did not refer to his notes during his delivery.

A fun time was had by all.
