There’s talks of a Tropic Thunder Spin-off featuring Les Grossman, I’m not sure if I like the idea. I liked the character cause it was small, I don’t see it working very well as a full movie. Here’s the article from Collider:
Screenwriter Michael Bacall is poised to be in high demand very, very soon. He co-wrote the wonderful Scott Pilgrim vs. The World with Edgar Wright, and he has two high-profile projects set to open weeks apart from each other: the much buzzed about 21 Jump Street and the Todd Phillips-produced Project X. In 2010 he was set to write a spinoff film for Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder, but we haven’t heard much about the project in quite some time.
Steve got the chance to sit down with Bacall to talk about 21 Jump Street and Project X, and while we’ll have the full interview up closer to the release of those films we wanted to share with you a few bits regarding the Les Grossman movie right away. Bacall confirmed that he wrote an R-rated script and revealed that it’s actually “a pretty heartfelt story.†Hit the jump for more.
Regarding the status of the film, Bacall said that it’s more to do with Cruise’s schedule than a development hold-up:
“Paramount has the draft and I gather that they’re pretty happy with it. I think Tom Cruise probably has a lot of stuff on his plate right now (laughs) and I think it’ll be a schedule thing more than anything.â€
The scribe confirmed that he intends for the pic to be R-rated and revealed that we’ll be delving a bit into who Les Grossman is:
“I wrote it for R because we had precedent with Tropic Thunder. It’s actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr. Cruise and Mr. Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so I’m hopeful that that’ll get up and running soon.â€
Though Grossman seemed to be an all-around terrible person in Tropic Thunder, it sounds as though we’ll be getting into why he’s such a despicable human being. I thought Cruise was surprisingly great as Grossman and I’m eager to see what kind of story Bacall, Cruise and Stiller have cooked up. I also sincerely hope that Bill Hader returns as Grossman’s right-hand man. The guy has insane comedic range and stole more than a few scenes in Tropic Thunder, so one imagines he’ll be back.
It may be a while before Cruise’s schedule opens up. He’s currently filming One Shot, he’s next set to star in Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi pic Oblivion, and he recently committed to Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill. Hopefully he gets to Les Grossman sooner rather than later, as I’m excited to see how this project comes together.

DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: When Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions were making the green light decision on the $150 million budget Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol following the lackluster $76 million domestic gross on Knight & Day, some wondered if Tom Cruise was still in the conversation as one of Hollywood’s most bankable male stars. The answer is yes. Today, the film will reach a global gross of $603 million, making Ghost Protocol the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s long career. It surpassed any film that Cruise made during his long relationship with Paramount, beating the $591.7 million gross turned in by War Of The Worlds.
Cruise has starred in five of Paramount’s top 10 grossing films in the last 15 years, with M:I4 falling in behind Titanic‘s $1.8 billion, Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull‘s $786.6 million, Forrest Gump‘s $677.4 million, and Iron Man 2‘s $623 million. The film has a strong chance to pass the Iron Man sequel. Studio insiders tell me that the film crosses the $400 million mark internationally today, and has already grossed $36 million in China after being released six days ago. We’ve seen how much Cruise put into the film as an actor — running up and down the Dubai skyscraper was something no star outside of Jackie Chan would do. Beyond, that, he spent 16 days promoting the film, covering nine countries on six continents. Cruise, who fought for JJ Abrams to make his feature directing debut on Mission: Impossible 3 (they produced Ghost Protocol together) also embraced Brad Bird to make his live-action directing debut this time around.
There will obviously be another Mission: Impossible, but those talks haven’t really gotten underway yet. Cruise, who opens in June in Rock Of Ages for Warner Bros, is shooting the Christopher McQuarrie-directed One Shot for Paramount (releasing February 2013), then goes right into the Joseph Kosinski-directed Oblivion for Universal in March (releasing July 2013), followed by the Doug Liman-directed All You Need Is Kill for Warner Bros. Sequels often make it bigger to draw bigger numbers, and Jeremy Renner and the supporting cast helped, but with Ghost Protocol, Cruise has certainly answered questions about his place in the movie star food chain.

Tom Cruise will serve as a presenter at the 84th Academy Awards, producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer said Wednesday.
Cruise, a three-time Oscar nominee for his roles in “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire” and “Magnolia,” will join previously announced presenters Jennifer Lopez, Tom Hanks and Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig from the film “Bridesmaids.”
The 84th Academy Awards, which Billy Crystal will host, will be televised live from the Kodak Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center on Sunday, Feb. 26.

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol has become the top grossing film in the Tom Cruise franchise, zooming past the $546 million earned by Mission: Impossible II to hit $571 million at the worldwide box office.
The film–restoring Cruise’s star status in the U.S.–secured the record over the weekend as it earned $25 million internationally for a foreign cume of $369 million and $3.6 million domestically for a North American total of $202.6 million.
Brad Bird, in his live-action feature debut, directed Ghost Protocol from a script by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. Cruise and J.J. Abrams produced with Bryan Burk.
“Brad Bird, Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and the entire team who worked on Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol created an incredibly entertaining film, one that fans worldwide embraced in record numbers,” Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said.
Ghost Protocol opened exclusively in IMAX theaters on Dec. 16 before expanding nationwide on Dec. 21.
