This time, the two at loggerheads are Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio who are both planning features on one H.H Holmes – a serial killer who stalked his victims at the 1893 Chicago World Fair. Cruise’s production company have just optioned the film rights to The Devil In The White City – a bestselling novel on the story. Meanwhile, Leonardo’s production house is also working on a story on the same subject – the difference being that DiCaprio is attached as the star of his project, while no casting has been annouced for Cruise’s movie.

Also Tom Cruise has donated $1500 to a youth drug programme.

Mr Cruise, sent the cheque and a letter after hearing about the work of the Drug-Free Ambassadors group, which encourages young people to adopt a drug-free lifestyle. Mo McLeary, manager for the group, said he was thrilled with the donation.

Cruise, who is working in Taranaki on the film The Last Samurai, said in his letter that it was inspiring to read about the group’s dedication to educating young people about drugs.
He said there was a lot of false information around, and providing children with the truth empowered them to make “pro-survival” decisions.

Also, Premiere Magazine announced that Tom Cruise was the highest paid actor of 2003, earning more then $ 71.4 million!

Premire Magazine released their Annual 100 power list- 100 most powerful people in the world. Tom Cruise snagged the 14th spot as the most powerful person. The second highest actor on the list following Tom hanks at number 13th.

Taranaki people have the chance to give Hollywood movie star Tom Cruise a memorable farewell.
The Edge radio station wants as many people as possible to assemble at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands at midday this Sunday – dressed in black – where they will be placed in formation to spell out the word TOMANAKI.

An aerial photograph will be taken and it was hoped it would be presented to Cruise before he leaves Taranaki later this month. Said Dominic Harvey from The Edge: “As a way of saying, `thanks Tom’, we want to get him a gift he will never forget. This is easier said than done – remember we are talking about a guy who earns millions of dollars a year.

“The photo is something no amount of money can buy and we have no doubt Tom would be proud to display it in his home or office. “It is hard to predict how many people will turn up to be in Tom’s photo, but the more locals in the picture, the better it will look, so we are hoping for a massive turnout,” he said.

Kidman phones Cruise after Oscar
Actress Nicole Kidman phoned ex-husband Tom Cruise to share her Oscar glory with him shortly after winning the Best Actress award.

Kidman made the long-distance call, from the US to New Zealand, where Cruise is staying, after taking the Oscar for her role in The Hours.

“Your heart has to stay loving,” Kidman told People magazine.

“It was so important to me to talk to [their son] Connor and yes, to Tom,” she added.

“We have very different lives now but, as I’ve said to Tom, I will be there for him for the rest of his life, always there.”

Kidman and Cruise’s 10-year marriage ended in divorce in 2001.

Kidman described herself as “very single” and denied tabloid newspaper rumours of a romance with British actor Jude Law, her co-star in the movie Cold Mountain.

“He’s a wonderful man and a good friend of mine, but there was no affair,” she said.

“We spent seven months shooting and it’s an intense love story so we were waiting for that. They did it with Ewan McGregor too, on Moulin Rouge.”

But Kidman said her life was missing something.

“I want someone who says, ‘I will stand by you and be there for you and your life is just as important to me as mine’.

“I’m not someone who just says, ‘Oh yeah, this is silly and light and fun’. I like to be in love. Nothing casual. I’m not interested in casual.

“I’m waiting for someone to come rock my world,” she said.

THE Cannes Film Festival next month may be the first public confrontation for Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman. Cruz will be there because her latest pic, a remake of the swashbuckler “Fanfan La Tulipe” with Vincent Perez, is opening the fest, and she never goes anywhere public without Cruise glued to her side. Kidman is going for the new Lars von Trier film, “Dogville.” No one knows the schedule yet – there could conceivably be a week between their visits, as the festival runs two weeks. But it will still be a Penelope-Nicole popularity and beauty contest on the Croisette.

Cruz, who rarely leaves the house without her favourite accessory (Tom) is there to promote her film Fanfan La Tulipe, a remake of the 1952 swashbuckling classic. Kidman will be there to scope out Dogville, the new Lars von Trier flick. A meeting is not guaranteed as the festival spans a fortnight, but as Fanfan opens festivities and Nicole rarely turns down such opportunities, a red carpet clash could be on the cards. About time too, as the trio seem to have circling each other warily for months. Cruise has kept in touch with Kidman since being the first to congratulate her on her Best Actress Oscar. They are both due to appear in films about witches, which went into production while they were still a couple. Kidman has just bought a $5 million New York flat overlooking one owned by Penelope. More worrying for Tom is the fact that Cruz is soon to appear in a Jekyll and Hyde remake with Jude Law, romantically linked with his ex in the past. Is there some weird synchronicity thing going on here?

Nicole responded by promptly bursting into tears. A friend of the alabaster actress said, ‘The emotion of the evening was all a bit much for her. She was genuinely shocked that Tom called her so soon. It meant a lot.’ Cruise has been a staunch supporter of his ex wife’s career – last year he used his Academy membership vote to back Nicole to win an Oscar for Moulin Rouge.

FILM hunk Tom Cruise yesterday spent two hours stunt-jumping with his children.

The star exclusively booked the 192m Sky Jump – which costs $195 to do a cable-controlled leap – for a fun afternoon with Isabella, 10, and Connor, 8.

“They all dived out like Superman, and then on Tom’s second jump he did a little run and did a big ‘Whoop’,” said the jump’s PR manager Delwyn Lewer.

Cruise is currently living in Taranaki while filming The Last Samurai.

Crowe’s sunday wedding is well underway. Despite claims the guest-list does not include celebrity types, there are rumours in town of famous faces expected to attend, including US movie star Tom Cruise, former husband of Nicole Kidman.

Cruise, who has been spotted in the past hooning around Coffs Harbour’s picturesque hills with Crowe on Ducati motorbikes, is understood to be flying in from New Zealand, where he is filming The Last Samurai.
