SPIELBERG AND CRUISE COLLABORATE AGAIN!

Dream Team Declare War: Spielberg and Cruise remaking War of the Worlds

You can?t get much more high profile than Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. They?re the kind of Hollywood players who have only to glance in the general direction of a project to get it made. While their one collaboration to date, Minority Report, was a critical rather than a box office success, their second is H. G. Wells? 1898 sci-fi classic The War of the Worlds, which could triumph on both fronts with Spielberg directing and Cruise in the lead role.

The story, which even those living on the red planet will surely be familiar with, is the story of the invasion of Earth by Martians. In the original story, strange meteorites fall to Earth and split open to reveal metal cylindrical alien craft, which rise up to sweep all before them with the help of their intensely powerful heat rays. How much of that will survive to appear on screen is hard to say – a first draft of the script has been produced but re-writes are now underway. Filming could start late next year if star and director are happy with the script.

The War of the Worlds earned notoriety in 1938 with Orson Welles? famous radio dramatisation in the style of a news broadcast of actual events, which caused panicked Americans to barricade themselves into their homes in fear of alien attack. A film version in 1953 used the word ?Martians? but meant ?Communists?, and boasted the tagline ?Mighty panorama of Earth-shaking fury as an army from Mars invades!? If Spielberg and Cruise can achieve the tension of the radio version, and brush up the acting and special effects of the original film, this will be something very special indeed. Close Encounters meets Mars Attacks! meets Jerry Maguire, perhaps.

  • Tom’s new rep.

Reuters has more on the split between Tom and his publicist Pat Kingsley.

The split, which happened on Thursday, had been in the works for some time, said Kingsley, a partner at PMK/HBH, who has handled his affairs since 1990.
Cruise will now be represented by his sister, Lee Anne DeVette, who works at his Paramount Pictures-based production company, Cruise/Wagner.
“It was something that was developing for a period of time,” Kingsley said. “And I think he wants to pull things internal (to his company). It was a very friendly, nice chat, with no hard feelings. I have the greatest respect for him in all areas.”
DeVette has been with her brother at C/W for 14 years. She first started at “the bottom rung of the company” and worked her way up, she said. Most recently, she has worked as an in-house publicist for Cruise, working closely with Kingsley on personal publicity activities as well as with the studios on campaigns for Cruise’s projects.
With a new movie in the can — DreamWorks’ fall release “Collateral”, from director Michael Mann — and “Mission: Impossible 3” upcoming, it is likely that Cruise may take on another outside representative.
“Will we potentially be looking for someone on films? Yes, we will, but no decision has been made,” DeVette said. “But Tom is very close with Pat, and they have a very, very good friendship.”

    Tom has roots in Wales

I had found this news the day it was reported but for some reason couldn’t access the site. Now I can (don’t know why) so here it is, better late then never!
The BBC posted an article claiming to have Cruise’s Welsh roots uncovered. Tom Cruise’s great-great grandfather Dylan Henry Mapother emigrated from Flint in north Wales to Louisville Kentucky in 1850 when he was 16. Tom is said to be descended from many generations of Mapothers living in Wales. He was told this on an American TV show and now Tom has been invited to visit north Wales. Cruise’s ancestral town uncovered tells us a little more about this town.

    Tom fired Pat Kingsley

This news has just came up: The New York Daily News reports Tom fired his rep Pat Kingsley, with whom he worked for 14 years.
And I’ve read Tom is a fan of Joss Stone, the new and great soul singer. Of course not that impressive as the other report but always nice to hear.

    Weird…

Okay, this script is possessed…, it stopped working from one minute to another, without me changing anything…
I think it will be working fine now…., e-mail me if it starts acting funny again….

    One more on Pen :)

Cruise Jets in After Cruz Collapses On Set

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise rushed to be with girlfriend Penelope Cruz after she collapsed while filming in Morocco. According to British newspaper the Daily Star, Cruz is suffering exhaustion from intense desert heat and violent sandstorms on the set of new movie Sahara. Her fears for her father Eduardo, who is recovering from a heart attack, are also thought to have taken their toll on the actress. Cruise was so concerned about his belle he jetted straight to the shoot location. He has already visited the set once during the grueling shoot, to try and help Cruz relax. A source tells the Daily Star, “The conditions on set are incredibly tough and can bring even the sturdiest of people to their knees. Penelope has been a total professional, but has found it tough going because of the extreme conditions and her worry about her sick father.” The actress is expected to make the most of the break from shooting, by resting and visiting her family in Madrid, Spain.

    Penélope collapsed in desert

Okay okay, it’s more about Pen than it is about Tom but everything concerning Tom you want to know, right?
British tv-website Sky.com reports that Tom rushed over to Penélope after she collapsed in the desert heat of Morocco where she is shooting her new movie Sahara in Morocco. She’s suffering from severe exhaustion due to vicious sandstorms and freezing nights. So if you want to see Tom: he’s in Morocco right now!

Nothing else to report that isn’t already found by Annie and Fanny. Enjoy the pics!
