  • Filming of WAR OF THE WORLDS started today in Newark, NJ. During a break, Cruise met with fans to chat and sign autographs. Pictures are here!

According to one fan, they had the surrounding streets closed with those yellow “Police: Do Not Cross” lines. After the filming that took place for about 1 hour the directors and others started shouting “30 minute Lunch break”. He was walking to a black jeep and everyone just ran from where they were to where Tom was. He was very generous in signing alot of autographs and taking alot of pictures with people. Many people didnt have paper for him to sign so they were giving him dollar bills!!

  • BO REPORT

Tom Cruise ‘s army of admirers turned out for “Collateral” in Japan, and M. Night Shyamalan’s fans embraced “The Village” in Italy over the weekend.

“Collateral” nailed an estimated $4 million on 388 screens in Japan, including $1 million in sneaks, rated as 19% ahead of the bow of Cruise’s “Vanilla Sky.” Thriller benefited from promo visits to Tokyo by the thesp and helmer Michael Mann, but the beheading of a Japanese hostage in Iraq (news – web sites) may have made sections of the population less receptive to the hit-man saga. However, UIP was confident the pic will be No. 1, ahead of “Be With You,” Japanese weepie about a widowed father and son who encounter someone they believe to be their long-dead wife and mom, from the producers of hit “Crying Out for Love, From the Center of the World.” “Collateral” gunned down roughly $9.4 million at the weekend, hoisting cume to $84.2 million.

  • Review ‘Collateral’

    From newindpress.com:

Tom Cruise in an adrenaline blast movie ‘Collateral’

    Tom Cruise

A lot of directors could learn from this one and we’re not just talking Bollywood and Kollywood but ol’ Hollywood as well. Here you have a story about a contract killer on a tight schedule – five people, one night. You’d think something like this would mean large amounts of bloodsplattering, paragraphs of bad language, and some show of skin. Nope, none of the above.

Mann just gives you this edgy, fast-paced thriller that zips you from frame to frame without a moment’s pause. With as much action in the talk as in the action itself.

You have just two people to watch – Tom Cruise as Vincent with his silver hair and eerie monotone and Jamie Foxx as Max with his taxi cab and dreams. Vincent hires Max for the night, tells him he’s in the real estate business and has to make five stops in the one night. Max is fine with that, the man’s a good tipper, and the money’s going to get him closer to the limo he’s always wanted to own. But that’s only until the first body drops from the sky onto his windshield, shattering everything – the car, the night, his dreams. And Vincent, well, it’s just one down, four to go. And that’s your movie for the night.

A total adrenaline blast without the blood and gore.

Director: Michael Mann; Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx

Tom wants David Beckham in M:I-3

    From New Kerala.com:

[Hollywood News]: London, Nov 3 : If Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise has his way then soccer star David Beckham will soon be seen doing a cameo in ‘Mission: Impossible 3’.

The ‘Collateral’ star who is a soccer aficionado and a great fan of Beckham, has struck a good rapport with David and his family, and would love him to have a small role in his latest movie.

“David is building up a profile in the States as a soccer stud and could easily feature in a cameo role in the movie. Tom is not only the star of the movie but also the producer, so what he says goes. If he wants David to feature in the film, then he will,” a source was quoted by the Daily Star as saying.

“It would boost audiences in the UK and the Far East. Tom is very shrewd and would be fully aware of the benefits of having Becks in the film,” he added.

  • Some info from an Academy screening of Collateral:

    ‘COLLATERAL’

A crowd of 800 showed up at one screening, despite competition from the Olympics on television. That’s good for the film and for its director, Michael Mann, but could be complicated for Jamie Foxx. Unless he is up for supporting actor for “Collateral,” he faces competing with his lead role in “Ray,” considered a strong contender for best actor

  • More from Joss Stone:

After Tom Cruise mentioned on a TV talk show that he was a fan, he and Stone became friends. “I went over to his house for lunch,” she says. “He has this trampoline in the back garden, and of course he does all the flips, because he’s Superman; he can do anything. He’s so nice, just a normal guy. And I love it because he has no agenda. What does he need from me? He’s Tom Cruise.”

  • More box office:

“Collateral grabbed six No. 1 debuts over the weekend, including terrific debuts in South Korea, Italy, Australia and Spain. The biggest start came in Italy where the Michael Mann thriller grossed $2,710,036 from just 260 screens. That easily unseated Hero ($1.1 million second weekend, $4 million total) and topped such other Tom Cruise movies as Eyes Wide Shut ($2.5 million from 300) and Vanilla Sky ($2.2 million from 287) openings.

La Mala educación remained in third place in Italy with a second weekend haul of $995,300 (€809,800) from 231 screens, falling just 20% for a $2.9 million (€2.4 million) total. Director Pedro Almodovar’s latest openes Stateside on Nov. 19. In Spain, Collateral recorded a $2,183,384 debut from 337 screens, besting The Bourne Supremacy by 16% and Enemy of the State by 9%. South Korea was most surprising, however, with a massive $1,664,988 start from just 141 screens. That was better than Minority Report’s $1.2 million and one of the biggest openings for a U.S. movie this year.

In Australia, Collateral was able to keep fellow openers The Notebook and Open Water at bay with a $1,726,542 launch from 233 screens. It has a strong $7,410 per screen average, but wasn’t released widely enough to top most Tom Cruise pictures.

Collateral also had two strong No. 1 debuts in Finland and Turkey. Finland registered $128,802 from 30 screens narrowly unseating Home on the Range while Turkey had a $470,854 debut from 150 screens.

Collateral continued to do well in holdovers as well, lead by France’s third weekend gross of $1,211,259 from 470 screens for a 19-day total of $7,928,831. It was off 39% from last weekend.

Collateral ended up with a $12,305,376 weekend overall from 2,618 screens in 19 countries, shooting its total to $59,485,867. Still to go for the Tom Cruise-Jamie Foxx vehicle are Scandinavia and Japan, where Cruise has extreme star power.”

Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey will host December’s traditional Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, honoring the 2004 laureate, Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai, organizers told the AP Wednesday.

“They really wanted to do it, right from the start,” concert organizer Odd Arvid Stroemstad said by telephone Wednesday. “They clearly know what the Nobel concert is, and what the Nobel Peace Prize is about.”

As masters of ceremony for the Dec. 11 concert in the capital, Oslo, Winfrey and Cruise will share the stage with plenty of high-profile entertainment.

Entertainers booked to play the show include British teen soul singer Joss Stone, opera vocalist Andrea Bocelli, jazz singer Diana Krall, pop singer Cyndi Lauper and Patti Labelle, along with several Norwegian artists.

The Nobel concert will be carried live in more than 100 countries, and traditionally draws some of the biggest names in show business. Last year, the event was hosted by Hollywood husband-and-wife Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

  • Tom Cruise leads $100 million movies club

…..“This is a movie that had legs, a concept that has all but vanished from the movie lexicon,” said Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Co. “It didn’t open with this huge bang but slowly and successfully built this audience. It hung in there and was always in the mix.” …..

…..Collateral” is Cruise’s fifth consecutive film to gross at least $100 million domestically and 12th overall. Dergarabedian said it has been “the Cruise factor” that has enabled the actor’s last five movies, all vastly different from each other, to be commercial hits. They include “The Last Samurai,” “Minority Report,” “Vanilla Sky,” and “Mission Impossible II.” “The Cruise factor to me is that he does something like ’Samurai,’ ’Collateral,” or ’Vanilla Sky’ — which are not ’Mission: Impossible’ — and the audience will follow him wherever he goes,” he said. “Tom Cruise appears on the screen and $100 million is almost guaranteed, even if it takes awhile.”

  • Collateral hit the $100 million dollar mark today at domestic box office. Yay! It’s the 5th movie in a row for Cruise to top $100 million, tying with his previous record (Though, Hanks’ holds the record for 7) And it is still topping int’l box offiice:

Ending “The Village’s” five-week reign, “Collateral” was the weekend champ overseas, nailing $8.9 million from more than 1,800 screens, propelling its cume to $38.5 million in 24 territories. But, typifying the general malaise, it was the first time since the dog days of early March that the weekend’s top title earned less than $10 million. Tom Cruise (news) starrer ruled in France, Belgium, Holland and Poland and held reasonably well in its second assignation in Germany. Gallic crix raved about the hit-man saga, one hailing it as a “triumph of the American system when it’s put together by artists: entertainment in its highest form,” and another saluting director Michael Mann’s “new form of melancholic lyricism.”

“Collateral” knocked “Look At Me” off its perch in France but exhibs were satisfied with the perf of the dark comedy from helmer/thesp/co-writer Agnes Jaoui

  • The War of the Worlds Filming Locations

The Star-Ledger says it’s been confirmed that director Steven Spielberg will film parts of Tom Cruise-starrer The War of the Worlds in New Jersey. Here’s several clips with the locations:

What is known so far: Both Ferry Street in Newark and Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne will see filming take place there, likely in November.

“In Newark, they’ve been in the Ironbound section, at the area called Five Corners on Ferry Street,” Friedman says. ‘They’ve been in there talking to all the store keepers, and they’ve got quite a lot of money in their budget to compensate them for shutting down during filming. They’ve even opened up a temporary production office in the Ironbound.”

And in Bayonne, the production has secured permission to build a gasoline station on a Little League ball field off Kennedy Boulevard — and then blow it up.

There is also a private home in Howell that the production has selected as a film location.
